Specification

Stepped Light Brick Facades with Upper Colonnades

This urban multi-family residential facade combines textured light brick masonry with a stepped volumetric composition, balancing a solid grid of punched windows with deeply recessed balconies and loggias. Illuminated by direct daylight casting defined shadows across the bays, the upper level dissolves into a structural roof colonnade that frames the sky above the masonry base.

A seminal precedent for critical regionalism and climate-responsive design, demonstrating how vaulted concrete forms clad in broken ceramic mosaic can integrate with sunken terraces and water channels to mitigate heat.

What we like about this project
The vaults are clad in recycled white ceramic tile mosaic to reflect sun glare and heat.

Geometry
A composition of parallel, semi-cylindrical concrete vaults of varying heights and lengths, integrated with low-slung, rectilinear terraced platforms and water channels.
Facade system
Load-bearing brick and concrete walls finished with rough plaster, topped by cast-in-situ concrete vaults.
Structural guess
Post-tensioned or reinforced concrete shell vaults supported by brick masonry retaining walls.
Spatial scale
Low-slung, human-scaled structures that sit close to the ground, with vaults rising to approximately one-and-a-half to two stories.
Lighting
Diffused, overcast daylight that softens the shadows under the deep vaults and highlights the texture of the mosaic-clad roofs.
Atmosphere
A serene, earthy sanctuary where the sound of trickling water and the shade of heavy vaults offer respite from the heat.
Environmental context
Lush, tropical garden setting with mature trees surrounding the sunken, terraced studio complex.
Spatial experience
The building steps down into the earth, creating a terraced landscape where the curved vaults emerge from the ground, interspersed with flowing water channels and grassy steps that invite outdoor movement.
Composition rhythm
Staggered parallel vaults offset in plan and section, balanced by the stepped horizontal lines of the terraces and water runnels.
