Unknown Works

Based in London and Hong Kong, Unknown Works crafts expressive civic and cultural spaces by contrasting raw timber armatures and web-perforated steel beams with saturated color fields, rooftop planting, and preserved historic ruins. This work provides a grounded precedent when humanizing utilitarian public kiosks through integrated greenery and lighting, or before detailing exposed structural spans against warm interior finishes across hospitality decks and exhibition halls.

Interior of a large industrial hall with exposed steel beams, cellular beams, red and beige walls, and skylights by Unknown Works.

Big Penny social

An interior precedent showcasing the integration of exposed cellular steel beams and bold color blocking within a large industrial hall.

What we like about this project
The stark color transition from dark industrial steel and grey to a vivid red wall and warm beige lower zone.

Geometry
Wide industrial bay with a low mezzanine frame, deep cellular beams stretching horizontally across the view, and a contrasting vertical red wall surface that defines the upper perimeter.
Structural guess
Steel frame with cellular beams supporting a metal deck roof and mezzanine.
Spatial scale
Double-height industrial scale with heavy structural steel members spanning long distances.
Lighting
Overhead daylight entering through roof skylights, complemented by shadowed recesses beneath the steel deck ceiling.
Atmosphere
Spacious, utilitarian, yet vividly punctuated by high-contrast primary color planes.
Environmental context
Large-scale industrial interior space converted for public or social use.
Spatial experience
A vast, open industrial volume where structural grid rhythm and bold color planes create strong visual zoning.
Composition rhythm
Repeating circular web openings in the cellular beams create a consistent rhythmic band across the frame.
Style reading
Industrial adaptive reuse with bold chromatic interventions
