Sevenoaks | Rural (in progress)
An interior precedent by SGS Design demonstrating the tactile juxtaposition of rough ashlar stone against flush wood cabinetry and a sweeping, sculptural stair soffit.
- What we like about this project
- The timber stair stringer seamlessly transitions into a continuous sculptural curve that wraps the underside of the upper floor edge.

- Geometry
- Horizontal composition anchored by a textured masonry wall on the left, full-height vertical wood panels beneath a sloping sculptural stair soffit, and a light-filled threshold on the right.
- Structural guess
- Concrete floor slab with masonry bearing or partition wall and custom timber stair framing.
- Spatial scale
- Human-scale architectural interior; full-height doors and stair span roughly two vertical levels.
- Lighting
- Soft, diffused daylight entering from the full-height exterior glass on the right, washing across the polished floor and casting gentle shadows along the stair soffit.
- Atmosphere
- Calm, grounded, and rich in material texture with a quiet interplay between heavy masonry and smooth timber curves.
- Environmental context
- Interior space adjacent to a glazed exterior portal framing outdoor foliage and a red Japanese maple.
- Spatial experience
- Transitioning from a heavy, grounded threshold defined by stone and warm wood cabinetry into a bright, open vertical volume framing exterior greenery.
- Composition rhythm
- Vertical wood panel reveals establish a measured cadence underneath the diagonal sweep of the stair.
