OPEN OFFICE

Based in Culver City, OPEN OFFICE creates multi-family apartments, single-family homes, and community farmstands defined by continuous building envelopes that merge sloped roof-to-wall planes, vertical timber rhythms, and deeply recessed volumetric apertures. This work offers a strong reference for detailing flush skylights in sloped metal roofing, extending exterior wood slat screens directly across glass openings, and integrating cantilevered planters within corrugated multi-story facades.

Exterior perspective rendering of Well Connected by OPEN OFFICE, featuring a perforated metal-clad massing alongside an existing house.

Well Connected

An exterior architectural rendering by OPEN OFFICE showing a contemporary perforated metal-clad infill building stepping down to integrate with an existing gabled house.

What we like about this project
The perforated cladding wraps smoothly over folded geometric corners, blurring the distinction between roof and wall planes.

Geometry
An angled multi-story volume clad in perforated metal sits adjacent to a traditional gabled house, stepping back in section.
Facade system
Perforated metal rainscreen wrapping angled exterior walls with punched openings and recessed balconies.
Structural guess
Steel frame or concrete slab construction supporting a lightweight rainscreen envelope.
Spatial scale
Human-scaled street edge with a three-story main volume beside a single-story traditional house.
Lighting
Soft, diffused overcast daylight casting subtle shadows across the facades and street.
Atmosphere
Friendly, approachable neighborhood atmosphere framed by soft daylight and active street life.
Environmental context
Suburban or urban residential street with mature trees, a sidewalk, and neighboring housing.
Spatial experience
A street-level porch area invites pedestrians into the building, bridging the sidewalk scale with the taller volumes behind.
Composition rhythm
Horizontal street plane contrasting with the vertical folding rhythm of the perforated metal facade.
