OPEN OFFICE

Based in Culver City, OPEN OFFICE creates multi-family apartments, single-family homes, and community farmstands defined by continuous building envelopes that merge sloped roof-to-wall planes, vertical timber rhythms, and deeply recessed volumetric apertures. This work offers a strong reference for detailing flush skylights in sloped metal roofing, extending exterior wood slat screens directly across glass openings, and integrating cantilevered planters within corrugated multi-story facades.

Hygge Farmstand

A contextual exterior precedent for low-slung rural architecture integrating dark volumes directly into a heavily forested landscape.

What we like about this project

Geometry
Low-slung, single-story rectilinear volumes nestled into a heavily treed sloping landscape, punctured by tall vertical multi-pane windows.
Facade system
Dark opaque corrugated or panelized cladding with recessed grid-framed glazing.
Structural guess
Light steel or wood-frame construction on grade.
Spatial scale
Single-story low-profile farmstand pavilions at human scale, dwarfed by surrounding tall evergreens.
Lighting
Soft, mottled daylight filtering through a mature forest canopy, casting diffuse shadows across the ground plane.
Atmosphere
Quiet, secluded woodland atmosphere with a peaceful natural retreat quality.
Environmental context
Wooded rural or semi-rural site with dense evergreen and deciduous trees, adjacent to an unpaved gravel clearing and asphalt road.
Spatial experience
Approached via a rustic gravel pathway and rural road, the low dark masses recede into the dense canopy while standing out through sharp vertical fenestration.
Composition rhythm
Horizontal massing punctuated by evenly spaced vertical window slots matching the tall trunks of surrounding pines.
